Statement of Faith
As members of First Baptist Church of Taft we are resting our faith entirely in the Lord Jesus Christ for our eternal salvation, we believe in the teachings of the Holy Bible and its authority. This statement attempts only to confirm some of what is central to our faith, and by intent it is silent on less weighty matters and peripheral issues. However, it is our conviction that what is written here represents a consensus of doctrine which we believe is revealed in scripture and part of our mission.
WE BELIEVE that the Holy Bible is the divinely inspired Word of God and that it is therefore the final authority in all matters.
(2 Timothy 2:15; 2 Timothy 3:16-17)
WE BELIEVE that God exists eternally and that He manifests Himself in three co-equal persons--God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.
(2 Corinthians 13:14; Colossians. 2:10; Matthew 28:19)
WE BELIEVE that Jesus Christ was born of a virgin and that He was at the same time both divine and human.
(Luke 1:16-28; Matthew1:18-25)
WE BELIEVE that the Holy Spirit is a divine person as truly as are God the Father and God the Son.
(Acts 2:38; Romans 8:26; Titus 3:6)
WE BELIEVE that the Lord Jesus Christ, God’s son, after being buried following His Crucifixion on the cross of Calvary, arose bodily from the dead. By His death Christ made full atonement for our sins and by His resurrection showed Himself to be the giver of life to all who believe.
(Mark 16:6; 1 Peter 1:3; Romans 10: 9-10)
WE BELIEVE that the forgiveness of sin and salvation made possible by the vicarious death of Jesus Christ on the cross, comes to people through personal faith in the Crucified One the Lord Jesus Christ–-and that salvation is by grace, and not by works. Redemption is God’s gift to all who believe.
(Romans 10:9-10; Ephesians 2:8-9)
WE BELIEVE that Jesus Christ Himself will come again to this world to rule and reign in righteousness and that His coming again is imminent and that it will be literal, personal, visible and sudden.
(Acts 1:10-11; Revelations 22:12; Matthew 24:44)
WE BELIEVE that this church is a community of faith consisting of regenerated believers the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior. Such believers claim a personal relationship to God through Jesus Christ, follow the Lord in baptism by immersion in water, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
(Titus 3:5; Colossians 2:12; Acts 2:38; John 3:16)
WE BELIEVE that the ordinances of the Church are believer’s baptism in which is shown forth the individual’s personal identification with Jesus Christ as Lord in being buried and raised in Him to newness of life; and the Lord’s Supper in which the believer shows forth their remembrance of the atoning death of Jesus Christ in anticipation of His coming again.
(Luke 22:17-20; 1 Corinthians 11:26)
WE BELIEVE that the local Church is autonomous, governing itself by the majority rule in order to guarantee equal right to all and special privilege to none, and resting upon its interdependence with other churches of like faith and practice for the carrying out of Christ’s Great Commission.
(Ephesians 1: 20-23; Matthew 28:18-20)
WE BELIEVE that the separation of Church and State must be maintained.
(Matthew 22-21; Romans 13:1-7)
WE BELIEVE that every believer is united in one body in Christ and that as a member of that Body has equal access to the throne of God.
(1 Corinthians 12:12-27; Romans 12: 3-8)
WE BELIEVE in the Sanctity of human life. Life begins at conception and upholding this sanctity of life is consistent with our Christian faith. (Jeremiah 1:5; Psalm 139.13)
WE BELIEVE in the Biblical representation of marriage as the union of one man and one woman. This is God’s ideal. In our fallen condition all sexual deviations from this ideal are an invitation for God’s amazing grace. Divorce, adultery, fornication, bestiality, Homosexuality, pornography, etc. are all classified together as deviations from God’s ideal. (Greek Pornea).
(Genesis 2:24; 1 Corinthians 7:14; Matthew 19: 5-6; Mark 10:8; 1 Corinthians 6:16; Ephesians 5:31)
